Original art work by Kelly Hull named "Threat". As the tornado threatens to touch down the farmer has left his field of wheat half cut. By the way Kelly Hull was an artist of renowned and has artwork all over the world. She was also my mother. She went home to heaven on June 29, 2003 with a painting she had just finished only days before still on her easel. This is a real scene she painted in Acrylic in 1975 and I am the proud owner of it. The Barn in the background was huge and did dwarf the house it was the biggest horse barn in the State of Kansas finished in 1912 although started in 1910. It was being restored by a group of historians and farmers my family included. Originally the barn Belonged to my Great Grandfather Thomas my Dad's Mom's father. The barn was 60 feet tall size of a 6 story building, 100 feet long and 50 feet wide. There was no center support beam in the haymow which could house 500 TONS of loose hay. 2000 lbs in a Ton. It was 5 stories tall from floor to ceiling in the haymow without a center support beam! Considered even today and engineering feat. It had a cat walk on top that you could climb on and move across the barn to change light bulbs or whatever else one might need to do up there. It was big enough they had motor cycle races in the haymow when it was no longer used for hay. It could house a regulation sized basketball court with all the goodies hanging from the ceiling and a full audience! By the way, basketball was played in there. It was all built on truss work. The house is a two story rather large house but the barn dwarfs it. The cupolas on top one could house a model T Ford in it or a modern day car as they aren't any bigger but not as tall either. They had blown off. The builder was asked if it would ever blow down. He said "No it might roll like a barrel but it will never blow down" And it never did. May 25 1995 the workers had left the barn that evening to go home. It was in the middle of the night a huge thunder storm came up. They had just put a new Lightning rod system on the barn and just got the barn rewired.. (it was first wired in 1912 and had its own generator at the time, it was a very advance barn even today. It was in the 1919 edition of Kansas Kansans there is a large article about it. It was said to be the most outstanding and largest barn in the state of Kansas..) but this night there was horrible lightening storm in the wee morning hours lightening struck the barn. No one was around. No one saw her burn even though there were people that lived across the road at the time, it never woke them up. Likely a very good thing or someone might have gotten hurt. All it burned was the barn and to the west where there was a hole in the barn for new windows it took off part of a fence though most was there and some out houses other than that nothing else burned and no one was hurt, even the barn cat and the barn swallows got out. Nothing died and there was nothing left. The fire burned so hot that it re-glazed the souvenir cups with ash so they have dark iridescent spots or strips or both, and if you didn't know better would have thought that was the way they should have been.. it melted cast iron into cast iron they use cast iron to melt other metals. There was nothing left. She burned within herself and no one saw her burn. This huge structure. They were getting ready also for the annual "Big Barn Festival" they had every year since 1989. It had been on the National Record of History Places to see. It is no more. The grass on the east and North side was not even burned. The rain was so heavy it put it out. Yet today I still look over as if I'll see it there and it is gone. The field in front belonged to my Aunt and now her children.. And My Dad and Brother farmed it. by Connie Hull
