Australia Day - January 26th.
Famous icons of Australia - Ayers Rock, now known by it's aboriginal name "Uluru": koala, kangaroo, Opera House and Sydney Harbor bridge, and my photo of Australian 'gum' trees (Eucalyptus), & coat of arms. Jan 26th was chosen as "Australia Day" as the first settlers from Britain arrived near present day Sydney on Jan 26th 1788. Colonies were started with mostly convicts, * in Sydney, New South Wales, * in Melbourne, Victoria, * in Brisbane, Queensland, * in Perth, Western Australia, and in Pt Arthur, Tasmania (Small island south of the mainland) *** Adelaide in South Australia was the only colony started by free settlers. I live east of Adelaide.
